March Of The Sultans

An ancient Ottoman song made into contemporary balkan beats! Antwerp based up and coming deejay and producer MERDAN TAPLAK mashed up the old groove with modern electronic beats. Dancefloor slammer!

The track will be released on the next Balkan Beats compilation (“Balkan Beats, A night at the Lido”), compiled by Robert Soko.

Check out the clip, with images shot in Petrol Club in Antwerp and Ost Klub in Vienna.

Drunken Balordi: born again Gypsy-Punk

London based Drunken Balordi is combining rugged vocals, acoustic instruments and folky licks to produce a fresh gypsy punk sound reminiscent of early Gogol Bordello. This one year old band is able to raise havoc with the crowd in minutes, as I witnessed last night in Mehanata.

Mahala Rai Banda new release

Four years and countless remixes after the release of their the debut album, here’s “Ghetto Blasters”. The new album is a mix of all that good stuff in the Balkan music: great percussion and vocals, mesmerizing solos, all on top of raw, syncopated brass straight from the Mahala’s of Bucharest.

The four Israeli DJs and numerous other collaborators produce some folky, oriental sounding hip-hop that reminds me of Balkan Beat Box. No wonder. They’re released on JDub records and collaborate with Tomer Yosef, BBB’s front man.

Balkan Hot Step Soundsystem

Formed from Belgian DJs Sam Rabam and Typsy Gypsy, Balkan Hot Step has been compiling good Balkan music mix tapes for a few years. A few weeks ago I found these excellent mashups signed by BHS on “This is Balkan Beats vol.1″. Great party starters.
